Asamoah Gyan gives reason for Legon Cities move, talks up GPL title chances

Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan says he joined Legon Cities because of their ambition as he believes the Accra based club has a lot to offer Ghana football.

The domestic top-flight league is set to start next week after several months of inactive football.

Gyan who has been without a club since January after ending his stint with Indian Super League side NorthEast United signed for the Accra based club on transfer deadline day and is in line to feature in the forthcoming GPL season, 17-years after Liberty Professionals.

The nouveau riche Ghanaian side beat competition from giants Asante Kotoko to sign the all-time top scorer for the national team.

Gyan explaining why he joined the club indicated their projects for Ghana football convinced him to sign.

“I’m a professional football player; Legon Cities is also a professional football team. They made an offer; I felt their offer will help me and the league as well. Now I’m home and will get the opportunity to see my family”

“They have a project for Ghana football and it is not going to benefit those playing in the country alone, it will benefit a lot of people. I’m proud to be part of Legon Cities, so as a professional footballer I’m doing my job” he said.

Gyan also shed light on the forthcoming GPL season and is of the view he can only make a bold statement about their chances of winning the league after some games despite some Ghanaians considering them as a serious 2020-21 Premier League title contenders with his arrival.

“Saying you can challenge for the league is very easy. You can purchase all the best players in the world but without knowing what you like, we cannot be successful”

“We have to play some matches before we will know whether we can win the league or not. The most important thing is that management are doing their best because they’ve signed players they think can help the progress of the team” he said.

The former Sunderland forward has started training with his new club as they prepare for the Ghana Premier League season.

Legon Cities will take on Brekum Chelsea in matchday one of the GPL at the Accra Sports Stadium.
