Playing in Ligue 2 very difficult task – Gideon Mensah

Published on: 06 June 2024

Ghana defender Gideon Mensah has described playing in Ligue 2 as a difficult task after getting relegated with AJ Auxerre two seasons again.

The 26-year-old, despite his struggles with injuries this season, was one of the key players for AJ Auxerre as they won the French second tier competition to gain quick promotion to the Ligue 1.

Mensah featured in 26 games in the Ligue 1 and provided two assists in their run to winning the French Ligue 2.

Reflecting on a tiring season, the former Salzburg man disclosed he had a positive feeling the club will return to the Ligue 1 from the start.

“It was a very long season for us. Myself, Elisha and the whole team. Playing in Ligue 2 for the first time from Ligue 1 was a very difficult task for me,” Mensah told the Ghana FA YouTube channel.

“From the start of the season I knew it was going to be a good season for us. It got to a point where it was not really how we wanted it to go but we strike on and it went our way at the end of the season.”

He will feature for Ghana as they take on Mali on Thursday night in a must win 2026 World Cup qualifier in Bamako.
