2023 U23 AFCON: No Ghanaian as CAF names best XI of group stage

Published on: 03 July 2023

There are no Ghanaian players in the 2023 U23 Africa Cup of Nations team of the Group Stage, as officially announced by CAF.

Ghana faced a disappointing exit from the tournament after a 3-2 victory in their opening game against Congo, followed by a 5-1 loss to Morocco, and a 1-1 draw with Guinea, confirming their elimination.

This means that the Black Meteors will once again miss out on the Olympic Games, extending their absence to 20 years until the next edition in Paris 2024.

Egypt and Morocco dominate the U23 TotalEnergies AFCON Best XI lineup with four players each, while Mali contributes three players.

Hamza Hussein of Egypt shines as the outstanding goalkeeper, having kept clean sheets in all three matches.

The defensive partnership consists of Morocco's Mehdi Boukamir and Egypt's Hossam Abdelsalam, while Fode Doucoure and Ibrahima Cisse from Mali secure spots in the defense due to their impressive game reading abilities.

A formidable midfield trio is formed by Mali's Cheickna Diakite, Ismael Saibari from Morocco, and Egypt's captain Ibrahim Mohamed, who also demonstrates leadership skills.

Completing the lineup is an exceptional attacking force composed of Egypt's Osama Abdelhady, Yanis Begraoui and Abdessamad Ezzalzouli from Morocco, and Mali's Cheickna Diakite.

Morocco's coach Issam Charai is recognized as the Best Coach for leading his team to three victories.
