2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers: Angola worked for the win, not because Ghana was poor – Pedro Goncalves

Many believed the Black Stars were poor against Angola in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, which is why the Palancas Negras won.

However, Angola head coach Pedro Goncalves said it was because his team got their tactics right in the 1-0 win in the teams’ first qualifying game on Thursday evening.

Substitute Felicio Milson scored the winner after capitalizing on a poor clearance from Abdul Mumin deep into stoppage time.

The Black Stars struggled to break down a resilient Angolan defense and failed to clear their lines when it mattered most.

The defeat was Ghana’s first at the Baba Yara Stadium in 24 years.

“It's not my opinion. For sure, whenever a big team suffers a defeat, everyone says, "No, they are poor." OK, but you must consider the other team and their work,” Goncalves said after the game.

“So maybe the lesson, and we learned that lesson a long time ago, is that each match in Africa is always very, very difficult.

“Nobody thinks you will win before the match. So I think it's very important to consider the other team and their work.

“So maybe the lesson, and we learned that lesson a long time ago.”

Ghana will face Niger on Monday in their second game while Angola face Sudan.
