African Games: Yusif Basigi confident of Black Princesses chances despite slim win against Ethiopia

Black Princesses head coach, Yusif Basigi, remains optimistic about his team's performance in the ongoing African Games women's football tournament, despite a less-than-convincing start.

In their opening Group A match against Ethiopia on Saturday, the Princesses managed a narrow 1-0 victory, falling short of their initial hopes for a more commanding win.

Throughout the game, the Ghanaian team struggled to break through Ethiopia's sturdy defense, with key players like Mukarama Abdulai, Maafia Nyame, and Comfort Yeboah facing difficulties in converting scoring opportunities.

It wasn't until the 59th minute that Comfort Owusu netted the sole goal of the match, even as the Princesses played with ten players following Abiba Issah's sending-off.

Coach Basigi acknowledged his team's failure to meet expectations but expressed confidence in their ability to bounce back in upcoming matches.

"While we anticipated a tough match against Ethiopia, our performance fell short in the first half. However, tactical adjustments in the second half proved effective for us, despite playing with a numerical disadvantage," Basigi commented.

He attributed part of their struggles to injuries within the squad, which necessitated changes to the starting lineup. Basigi remained optimistic, noting that as the tournament progresses, his players will regain their rhythm and cohesion.

Looking ahead, Ghana will face Tanzania in their next group fixture, while Uganda will take on Ethiopia. Defending champions Nigeria opened their campaign with a strong 2-0 victory over Morocco, showcasing their dominance early in the tournament.
