Black Meteors chief Frederick Acheampong cites weak defense for U23 AFCON failure

Chairman of the Black Meteors Management Committee Frederick Acheampong has attributed his side inability to performance at the U23 AFCON tournament in Morocco to weak defense.

According to him, defensive lapses let the team down resulting in their early exit at the ongoing tournament in the North African country.

Ghana conceded eight goals in three matches despite being promising in front of goal, ending their dream of returning to the Olympic Games in 2024.

“During the qualifiers, one department we had so much hope in was our defence. We conceded two goals from four games in the qualifiers so it appeared as though that was the strongest of our departments but when we arrived at the tournament there were changes,” Acheampong told 3FM on Sports Ultras

“Alex Opoku couldn’t turn out for the tournament and coaches had to make changes, and our most robust department became our weakest and we conceded eight goals in three matches, which is not good enough,” he added.

The Black Meteors Olympic Games qualification dream dashed following a 1-1 draw against Guinea in their final Group A game last Friday.

Ibrahim Tanko’s side needed a win to progress from the group stage to the semifinals but settled for a draw, leading to the team’s early elimination.

Emmanuel Yeboah's first-half opener was cancelled by a lovely volley from Guinea captain Ibrahim Fofona in the second-half.

The Guineans held on as they progressed to the semi-finals of the tournament while Ghana exit at the group stage of another tournament.
