CAF Confederation Cup: Lack of focus denied us a goal – Dreams FC coach Karim Zito after Zamalek defeat

Published on: 29 April 2024

Dreams FC coach Abdul Karim Zito has blamed lack of focus for his outfit inability to score against Zamalek in the CAF Confederation Cup semifinals.

Having returned from Egypt after a goalless draw in the first leg, the Still Believe lads went into the return leg in Kumasi with the advantage but things fell apart after succumbing to a 3-0 defeat at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Goals from Hamza Mathlouthi, Samson Akinyoola and Mostafa Shalaby were enough for the 2019 Champions to secure qualification to the finals of the competition.

After the game, Zito said his side could not find the back of the opponent net because of lack of focus.

"We never had this type of situation before. We didn't panic even after their first goal. You could see we pushed and created a lot of chances.

"It's a lack of experience. The boys only gave up after the third goal. I can do everything but if the players are not mentally stable there is nothing you can do."

"We couldn't make it to the final. Lack of focus denied us a goal. I'm proud of the boys, nobody thought we would reach here and I’m very happy. We met an experienced team and definitely, this is how it will go. We will know how to go about such games next time. So we can be proud of the journey,"

Dreams FC will now switch their attention to the Ghana Premier League and the FA Cup, where they have reached the semi-final. The FA Cup holders could return to Africa if they successfully defend their title.
