Daniel Opare stars as Augsburg beat Wolfsburg in Bundesliga

Ghanaian right back Daniel Opare played an influential role as Augsburg beat former Champions Wolfsburg 2-1 in the German Bundesliga on Saturday.

The player who has emerged on the radar of English side Stoke City played the entire duration as his side secured all three points.

Augsburg made a bright start at the WWK Arena, and looked set for a more straightforward afternoon as Wolfsburg were reduced to 10 men on just 11 minutes. Midfielder Maximilian Arnold was originally booked for pulling back a charging Alfred Finnbogason, but then given his marching orders following a Video Assist review.

The hosts looked to make their extra man count, with Finnbogason and Michael Gregoritsch both going close, but it was the visitors who took a surprise lead with their first shot of the game.

Daniel Didavi's rather speculative effort from distance ended up bamboozling Augsburg keeper Marwin Hitz, who spilled the ball into his own net to give the Wolves an unlikely half-time lead.

Gregoritsch missed a gilt-edge chance to equalise shortly after the interval, but made up for it a minute later as he finally got the better of Koen Casteels, firing in his sixth goal of the season.

Wolfsburg responded as Divock Origi forced an excellent diving stop from Hitz, but Augsburg were then awarded a penalty as Caiuby was tripped by Casteels following a rapid counter-attack. Nothing doing: another Video Assist review showed that the Belgian keeper had got the ball and the referee reversed his decision.

An Erik Thommy effort almost went in off substitute Ja-Cheol Koo before Finnbogason landed a knockout blow in the 78th minute, turning in a deserved second for Augsburg. Manuel Baum's men held on for a deserved victory as they moved five points ahead of Wolfsburg in the table.
