Former Chelsea midfielder and Real Madrid midfield powerhouse, Michael Essien opened the door for other European league star players to try to play in Liga 1.

This was revealed by Bali United coach Stefano Cugurra Teco. Essien played for Persib Bandung in 2017, even though it was only one season the world began to pay some attention to the Liga 1.

Speaking to Bali Tribune Teco said:

"Yes, certainly in 2017 when there was a marquee player like Michael Essien, the Indonesian League became more famous in Europe,"

"Other European players are starting to come to Indonesia," Teco said.

After Essien there were several players from the European league coming to Indonesia. Peter Odemwingie, joined Madura United in 2018.

Then there was the former Newcastle United player, Danny Guthrie who played for Mitra Kukar in the same year. And the latest is former Juventus player, Marco Motta who was signed by Persija Jakarta this season.

Teco said that if European players were still performing, more European stars will want to play in Indonesia. However, if in Indonesia the player experiences a decline in performance, maybe the clubs will turn their eyes to other countries or continents.

"I think it depends on the achievements of European players in Liga 1 now. If the performance decreases, maybe the team will not use them anymore and will see players from other countries,"

"But, if the performance remains good, surely other European players will come to Indonesia," he added.

Michael Essien 37, currently plays for FK Sabail in Azerbaijan.
