Forest owner to step down as Greek Super League president

Evangelos Marinakis has held the role of president of the Greek Super League since June 2022

Nottingham Forest and Olympiakos owner Evangelos Marinakis is stepping down as president of the Greek Super League.

It follows the announcement by the Greek government that top-flight matches will be played behind closed doors for two months to clamp down on violence.

Marinakis has held the role as president since June 2022.

"The words of certain board members are not consistent with their actions," he wrote in a letter.

The letter to the Greek league's board of directors added: "I've neither the time nor the desire to continue to be involved in the management of the league."

Top-flight football in Greece will be played behind closed doors until 12 February 2024.

The Greek government took action after a police officer was severely injured in violent clashes during a volleyball match between Olympiakos and Panathinaikos last week.

Both sides are owned by the football teams of the same name.

Hooliganism has marred Greek football in recent years and last year the government increased the maximum sentence for crimes of fan violence from six months to five years after another fatal stabbing.
