Former Ghana assistant coach Ibrahim Tanko appointed as Black Meteors coach

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed Ibrahim Tanko as head coach of the Black Meteors.

Tanko, who is currently the technical director of Ghana Premier League side Accra Lions is expected to lead the Black Meteors to the 2023 African Games to be held in Accra.

The former Cameroon assistant coach handled the Black Meteors in 2019 where the team failed to qualify for the Olympic Games.

Tanko started his career with State Envoys FC, a Kumasi-based colts club from 1984 to 1999, moved to King Faisal in 1990 and featured for the club until 1993 when he departed to join German side Borussia Dortmund in the 1993/94 season.

He spent seven years with Dortmund before joining another German outfit Freiburg, where he played for seven seasons from 2001 to 2007.

Tanko capped 20 times for the Black Stars, featuring in the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa where Ghana finished fourth.

He twice won the German Bundesliga title with Borussia Dortmund.
