Ghana’s Jerome Opoku named among top three defenders in Turkish top-flight
Ghana international Jerome Opoku has been named among the top three defenders in the Turkish league following his outstanding performance for Istanbul Basaksehir.
The 25-year-old was rated ahead of his Black Stars teammates Alexander Djiku of Fenerbache and Besiktas marksman Daniel Amartey by the statistics agency Comparisonator.
Opoku's teammates and Senegal international Ousseynou Ba tops the list of best performing defenders, scoring 394 points followed by Turkey interantional, who plies his trade for Yasin Özcan of Kasımpaşa with 392 points.
The Ghana international and Galatasaray defender Victor Nelson are tied on third position, scoring 378 points.
Opoku has been in sensational form this season, racking up four goals and serving two assists in 26 appearances in the Turkish league.
His impressive displays in both defense and in attack have helped Basaksehir to secure Europe qualification ahead of next season.
Opoku and his outfit will feature in Europe for the second time running after inflicting a narrow win over Sivasspor on Sunday.
Istanbul Basaksehir could compete in the Europa or Conference League depending on their final position on the log with two games to end the campaign in the Turkish Super Liga.
They currently sit fourth on the table, three points adrift of third-place Trabzonspor, and could qualify for the Europa League if they leapfrog the former champions at the end of the campaign.
Opoku joined the Turkish outfit from Portuguese club Arouca and has since established himself as a key member of the team.
He is expected to make the Black Stars squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifying games against Mali and Central Africa Republic respectively.
Ghana will play Mali in Bamako in June before the return to host Central Africa Republic at the Baba Yara Stadium.
