I was a better striker than Asamoah Gyan – Ransford Osei

Former Ghana youth star Ransford Osei has claimed he was a better striker than former Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan.

The former Sunderland and Udinese star remains the all-time topscorer of the national team with 51 goals in 109 appearances. And with six goals, Gyan is the highest African scorer at the FIFA World Cup.

Gyan is widely acknowledged as one of the best strikers to have emerged in the West African country but Osei, who won the FIFA U20 World Cup with the Black Satellites thinks otherwise.

According to him, he was a clinical striker than Asamoah Gyan and could have scored more goals for the country if he had been given the chance.

“During my time, there was no one better,” He told Pipapipa Media.

“Asamoah Gyan was a fantastic player, but he wasn’t as clinical as me. I could have scored more goals than him, but he had more opportunities than me.”

Osei also cited the presence of Gyan as a factor in his limited opportunities at the international level. “Even at Angola,” he explained, “I couldn’t get the chance because Asamoah Gyan was there and he was the most experienced player.”

Ransford Osei announced his retirement from professional football in 2021, citing recurring injuries over his inability to reach full potential.

He made 16 appearances for the youth national teams, scoring 10 goals in the process.
