Ghana's Black Starlets are stepping up their preparations for the upcoming WAFU Zone B U-17 tournament, according to GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum.

The tournament, which will be hosted by Ghana, is set to kick off on May 15 and conclude on May 29.

Asante Twum expressed his concerns about the team's absence from the U17 stage, both in Africa and internationally, since their second-place finish at the African tournament in 2017, which led to their qualification for the World Cup. The team's goal for the WAFU Zone B tournament is to secure either a first or second-place finish to qualify for the Africa U17 tournament.

In preparation for the tournament, the team has been training rigorously, including a recent trip to Russia, made possible through the support of UEFA.

The team participated in a four-nation tournament, facing off against Russia, Serbia, and Kazakhstan. Despite a 3-1 loss to Russia in their first game, the team bounced back with a 6-1 victory over Serbia and a 5-1 win over Kazakhstan.

"It is a major worry because we have participated for a long time since 2017 that we went to Africa and placed 2nd which lead to us going to the World Cup we haven't gone to the U17 both Africa and internationally so our plan is at the end of the tournament if we are not 1st we have to be 2nd to qualify for the Africa U17," he told Peace FM as monitored by Footballghana.com

"The team made preparations to enhance themselves so for the past 13 days they have been out of Ghana they went to Russia through the support of UEFA to participate in a four-nation tournament. Serbia, Russia as host, Kazakhstan, and Ghana were involved. The first game we lost to Russia 3-1, second game we beat Serbia 6-1 and beat Kazakhstan 5-1 on Sunday so in terms of preparations the team camped at Prampram to prepare themselves.

"The technical team led by Laryea Kingston have done a lot of work they started from our colts league selected players from the regions brought them to Prampram to evaluate them. They observed over 150 players and eventually, they selected core of these players from those they monitored so there is a standing team in place we are looking forward to receiving them in Ghana and continuing the next preparations. So that we will go into the tournament as host nation and not disgrace ourselves and perform well to qualify and represent Africa,"
