UEFA U16 Tournament: Fright led to our defeat against Russia – Laryea Kingston

The head coach of the Black Starlets, Laryea Kingston, says fear from his young players led to their defeat against Russia in their opening game of the 2024 UEFA U16 Tournament last month.

The former Ghana international indicated that about 95 percent of his players had not travelled on a flight before the tournament and were a little affect by the time on it.

The Black Starlets lost 3-1 to the host nation before they then won the following two games against Kazakhstan and Serbia by 5-1 score lines.

“They are also going on for about 18 hours’ flight, they are young as well, of course the integration will be very difficult for them,” Laryea said.

“So even in our match preparation to the game against Russia, we noticed it, we tried to motivate them, encourage them, but you know they are young, not all of them can come out of that.

“So you can see at the beginning of the game, most of them are jittery, after we conceded the three goals, you can see we dominated play throughout.

“So for me I think it's a learning experience for them. It's very important to me and then to the entire nation.”
