Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams is the second player of Ghanaian descent to win the Euros after Marcel Desailly.

Williams Jnr was on target when Spain inflicted a 2-1 win over England to annex their fourth European title on Sunday night in Germany.

Having clinched the title with Spain, the Barcelona target becomes the second player with Ghanaian heritage to win the competition after Marcel Dessailly, who was champion of Europe with France in 2000.

Until Sunday, Desailly was the only player with Ghanaian roots to have annexed the Euro championship. But Nico Williams ensured he joins the France legend following their triumph in the final over Spain.

The first half of the game ended in a pulsating goalless draw, as both teams struggled to find the back of the net.

After recess, the Athletic Bilbao winger opened the floodgate for Spain at Berlin Olympiastadion after connecting from Lamine Yamal’s pass, two minutes into the second half.

England pulled parity in the 73rd minute mark through second-half substitute Cole Palmer before Mikel Oyazarbal snatched a late winner for Spain.

The Athletic Bilbao forward opted to represent Spain at the expense of Ghana despite effort from the domestic football governing body (GFA).
