Players in Somalia don't value their national team - Bashir Hayford reveals
Veteran Ghanaian coach Bashir Hayford has revealed that players in Somalia do not value their national teams.
The Asante Kotoko head coach became the head coach of the Somalia national team in 2019 where he signed a two-year contract to replace Somalia's Mohamed Abdulla Farayare.
In February 2020, he stepped down from the job while noting that insecurity and attacks by Al Shabab informed his decision to ensure he safeguards his safety.
Speaking to West FM, Bashir Hayford has opened up on the challenges he faced in Somalia. While he stresses on the civil unrest, he indicates that players, in particular, do not value national teams in the country.
“I met so many challenges because of the Civil War in Somalia, their football collapsed, all their National teams were handed to me. They play their matches in one venue, players refused to join National teams because they don't value it, they don't have any professional players", the veteran gaffer said.
Now back in Ghana, the experienced tactician is hoping to become the technical director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
