Football is an incredibly popular sport all around the world. In fact, it’s the most popular sport in most countries. Thailand is one such country with a long history of devoted football fans.

Playing, watching, and betting on games, all very popular in Thailand. Here’s some more about the unique relationship between Thailand and football.

Internationally

Thailand has a significant base of football fans who enjoy watching. There is also a significant population that enjoys betting on their favorite teams and anticipated matches. Of course, ASEAN Football Federation matches are very popular. Thai fans also follow FIFA and UEFA matches closely.

The Thai national team is known as The “War Elephants”. They have a proud history of performance for their country. The team has seen three ASEAN Football Champion finals, winning two. They distinguished themselves regionally during the 2018 FIFA World Cup. They were the only Southeast Asian team to reach the 3rd round of Asian qualifiers.

Domestically

Football enjoys widespread popularity domestically in Thailand. Many fans attend domestic games every year. Thai football first emerged from Bangkok-based semi-professional leagues. Today, the nationwide professional leagues are highly competitive. This is very impressive given how early we are in Thailand’s emerging football scene.

The top Thai football league teams are Port FC, Chonburi FC, Bangkok Glass FC, and Muangthong United FC. Each of these teams has a committed fan base that supports them all the way. Port FC, in particular, draws massive crowds. Their PAT Stadium matches draw nearly 12,000 fans, almost breaching stadium capacity.

Thai fans follow many traditions common in European countries as well. They swirl scarves, wear Stone Island clothing, and bounce rowdily to the beat of drummers. The practice of heartedly following chants is well established in Thailand. Crowds can be energetic but are also friendly and welcoming. Many countries can see hooligans get out of hand. There’s a strong social stigma against such behavior in Thailand. Visiting teams are always given a warm welcome by the locals. Match attendance includes many families as well, offering an experience for all ages.

History of Thai Football

Football first came to Thailand in 1897. It wasn’t until April 1916 that the country founded an official association. It was The Football Association of Thailand Under Patronage of His Majesty the King. The association joined FIFA in June of 1925 and then the AFC in 1954.

Thailand’s first international match was against an Indochinese team. Their opponent included both South Vietnamese and French players in 1930. The popularity of football continued to grow in the country. They built their first football stadium, Supachalasai Stadium, in 1935.

The Thailand national football team made its Olympic debut in 1956. The host city was Melbourne, Australia. Unfortunately, they suffered a 9-0 defeat by Great Britain in the first round. The team wasn’t deterred, however. They reappeared at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.

Despite their resolve, the team fared poorly in Mexico City. They lost all three of the matches they played. This included 7-0 against Bulgaria, 4-1 against Guatemala, and 8-0 to the Czech Republic. They did manage to improve over 1956, scoring one goal. The goal came from Udomsilp Sornbutnark against Guatemala. The team hasn’t qualified for the Olympics since 1968.

While Thailand joined the AFC in 1954, they didn’t reach the AFC Asian Cup until 1972. There, they managed to reach the semi-finals. South Korea knocked out the team in their match. However, the team secured 3rd place with their win over Cambodia.

The Thai women’s team has had even greater success than the men’s. Since 1975 they have been runner-up in three of their four tournaments. The team even won the 2011 AFF Women’s Championship. This victory is Thailand’s top football achievement so far.

Sports Betting in Thailand

It is difficult to discuss football in Thailand without also mentioning sports betting. Like many other countries, football fans in Thailand enjoy sports betting. Unlike many countries, this is incredibly popular in Thailand. It is estimated that nearly 60% of Thai adults engage in some form of gambling. They make a significant number of bets on both domestic and international matches. Online sports betting is widespread, with fans making the most of betting websites.

There is a wide range of different ways that football fans can bet. Football is, of course, one of the top sports around the world. This means that fans have ready access to plenty of information online. It isn’t hard to find all the information on teams, leagues, and matches. The two favorite football events for Thai fans are the Thai and English Premier Leagues. Of course, FIFA matches are always the perfect choice for bets as well. However they enjoy it, it’s clear that Thailand’s love of football is here to stay.
