Ghana’s Black Meteors coach Ibrahim Tanko has explained why he started Ernest Nuamah from the bench in their crucial game against Guinea at the U23 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The Black Meteors Olympic Games qualification dream dashed following a 1-1 draw against Guinea in their final Group A game last Friday.

Ibrahim Tanko’s side needed a win to progress from the group stage to the semifinals but settled for a draw, leading to the team’s early elimination.

Emmanuel Yeboah's first-half opener was cancelled by a lovely volley from Guinea captain Ibrahim Fofona in the second-half.

The Guineans held on as they progressed to the semi-finals of the tournament while Ghana exit at the group stage of another tournament.

Explaining why Nuamah started from the bench in the crucial encounter, Tanko said, “Two days ago, I knew Nuamah is going home because he told our doctor that he is injured and cannot play, but he was still part of the group ones he had not left camp”

“Two hours before the Guinea game, he called me and said he is available and since he told me he is available we started him from the bench”

“I think when we conceded the goal, we thought he would come and help us but unfortunately it paid off” he said.

The Black Meteors has failed to qualify for the Olympic Games since 2004, Athens.
