WAFU B U17 Cup of Nations: Pressure on Ghana as Black Starlets begin quest to return to U17 AFCON

Published on: 15 May 2024

Pressure is mounting on Ghana's U17 male national team, the Black Starlets, to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after missing the two previous tournaments.

The team has not qualified for the tournament in seven years. The last time the Black Starlets qualified for the competition was in 2017, where they finished second and qualified for the World Cup.

The team has also not qualified for six of the last six U17 AFCONs, adding to the pressure.

Laryea Kingston’s boys will kick off their journey today, Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium at 4 pm.

“Yes, we’re under pressure to perform because in the last two editions, we have not been able to qualify. I know Ghanaians expect us to qualify and that puts some pressure on us,” Kingston admitted.

“There is pressure on us but where we’ve taken the boys to and the preparations we have had, thanks to the FA, we’re ready.”
