Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston is eyeing a fly start at the WAFU Zone B U17 Championship as the Black Starlets takes on Ivory Coast in opening game on Wednesday.

The Ghana U17 will take on their Ivorian counterparts at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 1600 GMT followed by their game against Benin on Tuesday, May 21, 2024.

The WAFU Zone B U17 Championship will serve as qualifiers to the U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) slated for 2025.

Having failed to secure AFCON spot since 2017, Laryea Kingston and his technical team are poised for a strong start to the WAFU championship as they aim to secure AFCON spot after seven-years absence.

The team appears to have had an adequate preparation at the Ghanaman Centre of Excellence in Prampram for the tournament, featuring in a series of friendlies.

Laryea Kingston and his charges participated in the UEFA U16 Invitational tournament held in Russia last month and made a good account of themselves.

After succumbing to defeat to Russia in the opening game, the Black Starlets made amends to secure 5-1 victories against Serbia and Kazakhstan

Securing a top-two finish in the tournament would guarantee qualification for the AFCON, a goal the Black Starlets are determined to achieve.
