Why Liam Bridcutt Would Be a Good Acquisition for Aston Villa

According to Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa are interested inSunderland midfielder Liam Bridcutt this summer. The experienced ball-winner would bring steel and industry to the side, and is a perfect transfer target given the policy changes under new manager Roberto Di Matteo.

Even before the Italian coach was appointed Aston Villa's new manager, steps were in place to ensure the side would undergoa complete overhaul on their transfer policy. The past scouting team were relieved of their duties, and an emphasis on industrious British players was made.

Bridcutt is exactly that. The Scotland international, a former Chelsea youngster, is diminutive and combative. He averaged a tackle or interception every 15 minutes during his loan spell with Leeds United last season, and is a player who will cover every blade of grass to harass the opposition.

A two-time Player of the Season winner with former side Brighton & Hove Albion, before making the shortlist for the Leeds United Player of the Year award in his short loan spell in 2015/16, Bridcutt struggled for game time with Sunderland in the Premier League, but in the Championship he's proven to be highly effective.

Leeds are oneof many sides keen to sign Bridcutt on a permanent deal but it's hard to see the Scottish international turning down Aston Villa if they submit a formal bid. While new-boy Aaron Tshibola of Reading will give the midfield pace and energy, Di Matteo wants a defensive influence to quell the threat of the opposition.

At times impulsive and struggling with indiscipline, Bridcutt's winning nature can lead to him getting into trouble. The 27-year-old doesn't have much in the way of a creative spark, and has been questionable with his decision-making on the ball. However, when his task is simplified he's at his best.

Aston Villa do have an abundance of midfielders in the squad this summer, but they're expected to part company with Sanchez and perhaps the coveted Idrissa Gueye which would surely give Bridcutt the green light to sign the deal.
