World Cup 2022: Spain skipper Sergio Busquets retires from international football
Sergio Busquets' time with the Spanish national team came to an end after the team was beaten by Morocco in the World Cup round of 16.
In the round of 16, he missed a penalty during the penalty shootouts against Morocco, which ended in a 3-0 defeat after a goalless draw.
The 34-year-old announced through Instagram: "I would like to announce that after almost 15 years and 143 games, the time has come to say goodbye to the national team."
The Barcelona midfielder celebrated winning the World Cup with Spain in 2010, and in 2012 he was crowned European champion. For the midfielder, it was "an honor to represent my country and lead it to the top, to be world and European champions, to be captain and to play so many games, with more or less success, but always giving and meaning everything Participating in making everything as good as possible and making everyone feel important, helping everyone and fighting for the same goal, with unique, unforgettable and historic experiences.”
Busquets was called up to the senior team for a friendly against England on February 11, 2009. He played in his first senior tournament in the summer, helping Spain finish third in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa. During the Euro 2016 qualifying round, he scored his first international goal against Macedonia on September 8, 2014.
